Our TENTH anniversary!!
Tonight marks two very special occasions in the Burger Quest calendar.
First and foremost, it is our TEN WEEK ANNIVERSARY!!!! Yes, you heard correctly, we've been on this Quest now for ten weeks, and we remarked tonight that we've not missed one!! We're all a little proud, and we have a few surprises in store for you (our loyal readers) during the week to come.
The second VERY important celebration tonight is that it's Hungry Hungry Hippo's birthday!! So please join me in wishing him a VERY happy birthday!!!! :) We all love you SO much HH Hippo and wish you much happiness and many delicious burgers in the year to come.
SO. Onwards and upwards.
Tonight we find ourselves at Burger It - a little unassuming spot once again on O'Connell Street, North Adelaide. I have to admit at this point in time, that each time we end up this close to Burgastronomy, I find myself wanting to go back there again and again and again. It's really difficult for me to look past how much I enjoyed that burger. But here I am, getting sidetracked.
Hungry Hungry Hippo and Chicken had previously been to Burger It before, and tonight we were joined by Chipolatte and Fried Rice (who had previously joined us on one occasion, and has now proven himself worthy of a Burger Quest persona).
I order the Cheese & Pickle It (beef, dill pickle, cheddar, herby mayo, lettuce, fresh tomato, homemade tomato relish), Hungry Hungry Hippo ordered the It's Classic which is quite similar, but has beetroot too, Chicken orders what is essentially a cheeseburger, Chipolatte gets a chicken burger of some description and I can't remember what Fried Rice got, but I know it had beetroot and possibly had avocado too?? Anyway, we got some fries and aioli too for the table.
Chicken wanted me to point out that this is the first place we've been to where everyone else who walked in the door was female. She makes a good point - burgers do tend to be blokey food and the majority of clientele at the other places we've been to have been male, but here there are lots of girls. Don't know if that means anything - it probably doesn't, in fairness, but it was noteworthy all the same.
Our burgers arrive and Chicken exclaims immediately that they smell delicious (they really do). The burgers are sitting nice and tall on the plate, although the burger is placed directly on top of the napkin, which I know isn't relevant, as you can just take the burger off and pull the napkin out, BUT as we were about to learn, these burgers were very drippy and the napkin was fairly necessary, so you don't really want it stuck underneath the burger in your time of need. Oh dear, I'm getting ahead of myself again.
With a resigned sigh I notice there is one solitary sesame seed, which I expect was left there by mistake, rather than in a very frugal attempt to call it a sesame seed bun. There's also little to no glaze, but the bun IS nicely toasted and has a lovely crunchy outer, which is a definite bonus.
We all open the lid of the burger this time around to inspect the insides. They're all pretty tidily put together burgers so it was interesting to see inside. The first thing anyone noticed was all pickle-related. Chicken and Hungry Hungry Hippo immediately note that there is a MOUND of them on the inside, but alas, they are not pickles, but gherkins. I think we went through this a couple of weeks ago, but in case you missed it - gherkins and pickles are NOT the same thing. A gherkin belongs on a sandwich, according to Chicken, and a pickle (which is not sweet, like a gherkin is) belongs on a burger. The first thing I notice on mine, is that the "dill pickle" as noted in the ingredient list, is actually more like a mustard pickle relish and NOT PICKLES AT ALL!!!! This obviously makes me a little sad, because I chose the pickle burger on purpose and I just really love my pickles. Seriously, every single other burger place (all of them, even the best on the list) could learn a thing or two from Street ADL and their big, juicy pickle (which in the photo looks like a dancing cactus and is ridiculously cute) - it is the perfect tartness and pickliness and crunchiness and is one whole fairly large pickle, sliced lengthways, which allows for some of that tangy tastiness in every succulent mouthful...
Man, I'm getting so sidetracked today!! I apologise for constantly straying off topic, but I have a feeling it's going to be one of those nights.
Anyway, back to our first impressions. Chicken says it's a nice, tall burger and she appreciates that it's served on a proper ceramic plate, especially considering it's more of a takeaway kinda place. Hungry Hungry Hippo said it looked how he had expected - a solid, regular, everyday burger. Fried Rice comments on the napkin underneath and says it already had sauce on it by the time he'd freed it from the burger above. He said the burger looked good though and that the aroma was appealing.

So, what did we think of it??
Bun 6/10
Chicken - it was warm & toasty, and held everything together well (although her burger didn't have the same level of sauces as the rest of ours).
I really enjoyed that the outside was SO crispy and crunchy. It was a lovely level of toastiness overall which I thought complemented the light fluffy inside really well.
Fried Rice said that he appreciated that the bun wasn't soggy, nor was it over-toasted.
Hungry Hungry Hippo said it was just a toasted white bread roll.
Chipolatte said it was good, but nothing to write home about. This prompted a conversation about WHEN you would EVER write home about a burger bun. We will keep you posted if we ever do write home about one. Hehehehe.
Patty 5/10
Chicken said it smelled and tasted good, the size and thickness were good, but it was overcooked, which was a "significant devastation." I personally thought it smelled great, but was definitely overcooked. It was a little bland after the first bite though and it was dry, yet at the end of the burger I had managed to get gristle in my teeth. Sigh.
Hungry Hungry Hippo said it was dry and he didn't like the taste. It also left an odd aftertaste which he wasn't entirely fond of. Fried Rice said it was a little dry, but he did enjoy it all the same.
Value 7/10
I reckon that for under ten bucks, I can't really complain. I was full at the end and I did enjoy it. Chicken said she was "stuffed to the brim AND overflowing" (which again sparked some interesting debate as to whether or not you can be both - I said yes, although Chipolatte argued that if you're overflowing, you're not stuffed to the brim, as "to the brim" indicates that it REACHED the brim, but didn't proceed to flow over that brim) and Chicken enjoyed the burger for what she considered a very decent price. Hungry Hungry Hippo said that he'd have rated it higher if the burger was a bit more enjoyable, Fried Rice said that it was decent and that he'd paid more for worse food. Chipolatte appreciated that it was cheap and thought that was very good value, even though the burger wasn't the best he'd had.
Balance & Composition 7/10
It was a little too drippy for me, and the "dill pickle" was just a little bit weird.
Chicken said that everything was spot on, but there were too many gherkins and they were all piled on top of each other. There was ketchup on the top and bottom bun, which made her very happy as she loves ketchup.
Hungry Hungry Hippo said that this burger was "put together well enough"and Chipolatte's only real complaint was that there was a big whack of sauce in one spot, which was overpowering in those mouthfuls.
Fried Rice made one of the most considered and well thought-out comments of Burger Quest history here though, when he said, "the tomato and sauce were in the middle of the burger, which stopped the bun from getting soggy. Although the patty was dry, the moisture of the beetroot, tomato and sauce offset the dryness of that meat."
Flavour 6/10
I loved the first few bites, but halfway through my tastebuds did get bored.
Chicken liked the charred taste of the patty.
Hungry Hungry Hippo said it was "nothing spesh."
Chipolatte's chicken was a little overcooked and there was a bit too much sauce in some spots.
Fried Rice commented that nothing about the burger was overpowering. He said it could've been a lot better, but by the same token there was nothing too disappointing and he enjoyed it overall.
Overall 6.2/10
Look, we've definitely had better, but we've definitely had worse. There's nothing offensive about this burger and for the price tag, it's a decent meal even on its own. Chicken said she'd still come back if she was in the area (although I didn't have the heart to remind her that Burgastronomy is just up the road) and Hungry Hungry Hippo said that despite having been here before and not enjoying it, it wasn't as bad as he remembered. Fried Rice, in his first official Burger Quest reviewer capacity said that it was a good burger, but the chips were a bit of a let down.
