Needs more sauce...
Tonight will be short, sharp and shiny. Sorry, it's just a bit late and I'm super tired and it wasn't the greatest burger tonight, so rather than bore you with details I'll attempt to stay on track for a change!!
We found ourselves all the way down at Glenelg again, this time at Relish'd.
This place scored No. 5 on the Advertiser's top 10 burgers in Adelaide list, so we had high expectations, although after some of our experiences over this Quest we've come to the realisation that whoever wrote that article either had no idea what he was talking about, or he never actually tasted the burgers he "judged."
Chicken made a few observations about the place as we sat down to order. It has very adequate seating, it's cozy and spacious, she likes that there's a bathroom and it was nice and neat and not at all pretentious. She thinks the menu is a little too cramped & small though, and I happen to agree.
We order our burgers (the others had already had some chips before I arrived) with Chicken opting for some pirate something or other (a veggie burger) and Hungry Hungry Hippo and I both going for the Relish'd Burger - 100% lean beef, lettuce, tomato, fresh herb aioli & relish, his on wholemeal, mine on the white bun. We both add pickles and cheese, I opt for mine without onion. The burger comes to around $10.
The burgers are served on a white ceramic plate with a steak knife stabbed through the heart of it. It's a pretty cool way to present it, but I think this would be better suited to a wooden board situation rather than a plate. Either way, it looks a bit fancy!!
First impressions of mine are that it's well toasty and dark, there are seeds aplenty and a very appealing glaze. In contrast, the wholemeal buns are not glazed and have no seeds, but Chicken and Hungry Hungry Hippo are both happy with the toastiness. Hungry Hungry Hippo opens it up to inspect the insides, and the first thing we notice is that there is only a VERY small amount of relish. Quite disappointingly so, in fact. However, the pickles... Smell... AMAZING (Imagine me saying that in an Oprah sing-song voice)!!!!!!!!
I pick up my burger and it is VERY light. There's nothing to it. It seemed to sit nice and tall on the plate but after a bite the bun flattened down to nothing, and it took probably 6 or 7 bites before I even got to any meat. It was pretty obvious there was very little to this burger.

So what did we think??
Bun 5/10
I think it LOOKED appealing, but first bite it went flat. It was all air, very papery and dry.
Chicken: It's a good wholemeal burger bun. It's too big for the patty though, but it's organic and I like organic.
Hungry Hungry Hippo: It's nothing special.
Patty 5/10
Very small, a bit meh. It tastes nice enough, but is overcooked and a little lost.
Chicken had a veggie chickpea & spinach patty. It was a bit too thin but yum.
Hungry Hungry Hippo liked the fact that it was real meat. I agree with this sentiment.
Value 7/10
Can't really fault the value of the burger & chips, but the drinks here are expensive. Good value, but BYO softies!!
Balance & Composition 4/10
I didn't think the relish matched the rest of the burger. It would have been tastier with good old ketchup instead. The whole thing was very drippy and leaked juice all over the plate, but the burger was dry. It lacked moisture entirely.
Chicken says the relish was too dry and there wasn't enough sauce.
Hungry Hungry Hippo says there was too much bun and not enough patty - the bun:patty ratio was way out of whack. It was like putting a square peg in a round hole - it just didn't fit. He said that "for a place called 'Relish'd' give me half a decent serve of relish!!"
Flavour 5/10
It must be said that these were the second best pickles we've come across. Hungry Hungry Hippo had missed good pickles since day one. He wanted to give it two bonus points for pickles and that's lucky, because he'd have given it a 4/10 otherwise. So his vote was 6/10. Chicken & I brought this down a little.
Chicken said that the patty was very flavoursome and she enjoyed the plentiful roasted red peppers, but that's all she had on her burger, so there wasn't much else to it.
Me?? Well, I didn't have anything bad to say about it, really... it wasn't crap.
Overall 5.2/10
Hungry Hungry Hippo said that if he was coming this far, he'd go to Enuf burger instead. I couldn't agree more.
